Innovation workshops reinforce local capacity in El Salvador and Honduras

Central America – Israel, considered one of the top countries in innovation, share its experience and skills on the subject, through two Business Lab Workshops on Innovation, in El Salvador and Honduras. Both were possible thanks to the Technical International Cooperation between the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and Israel, through Israel's Agency for International Development and Cooperation (MASHAV) and the Golda Meir Mount Carmel International Training Centre (MCTC).

Taller De Innovacion El salvadorThe training was facilitated by Marcelo Firstman and Rina Faistein, israeli specialists from MCTC with international experience. The first workshop was held in El Salvador on the 11-15 of November 2013 at the Universidad Tecnológica de El Salvador (UTEC). To realize this workshop, YABT joined forces with the Asociación para el Desarrollo de la Educación, Salud, Medio Ambiente e Infraestructura en El Salvador (ALDESAI) and the INSERT association, local partners that brought together the 25 persons, young entrepreneurs and coordinators of local organizations that promote economic and social development for salvadorean youth.

The second workshop took place in the capital of Honduras, on the 18-22 of November, as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week 2013. This workshop was organized by the METAS Project (EDC-USAID) and Junior Acheivement Honduras (JAH) and was geared towards 25 participants representing public, private and academic institutions, connected with the topic of youth, entrepreneurship and employment. These included: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH), Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras (UTH), Honduran Counsil on Private Businesses (COHEP), among others. The Opening of the Workshop was also marked by the National Launch of the Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas (TIC Americas 2014) and Eco-Challenge 2014, with the presence of authorities from the organizing institutions and local partners (More info: )

The goals of the Workshops included consolidating youth trainers methodologies in business management, thus enabling the replication of the program through the trainees. Also, such habilities as business management, innovative thinking and other competencies were tought, in a hands-on rigorous environment to simulate the daily rythm of the business world.

Taller de Innovacion Honduras

From the beginning, the participants worked in teams in order to conceptualize and develop a business idea, presenting their advancements and commercial validations every day, and by using elevator pitches, receiving feedback from other participants and the trainers. On the last day, each team presented their project to a Investement Panel, formed by private sector representatives and institutions that support business development.

The agenda also included a presentations on support programs and innovation financing. In El Salvador, this was presented by Mr. Alejandro Panameño, Promotional Coordinator of the Fondo de Desarrollo Productivo (FONDEPRO), a fund that has six support lines. Meanwhile, in Hondruas, Sr. Raúl Sánches, General Manager of the Red Katalysis, a Microfinance Network in Central America, made the presentation.
