Youth-IN Entrepreneurship Business Labs Replica for Young Entrepreneurs in the Caribbean
Washington D.C., March 17, 2014− The Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Subregional Office for Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) are proud to announce the implementation of Business Labs Replicas targeting young entrepreneurs held in Anguilla, Jamaica, Montserrat, and St Lucia. In the upcoming months, future replicas are already scheduled for Barbados and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. These replicas were possible thanks to participants of the First Regional Training of Trainers on Business Labs Methodology (TOT) Saint Lucia in November 2013. This training was possible thanks to Israeli Cooperation Mashav's collaboration.
Facilitators of the above-mentioned replicas are part of an extensive Certification Process to become Business Labs trainers; the Ministries of Youth of Fifteen CARICOM Countries nominated participants of the YABT/UNDP TOT
The Business Labs program consists of a 5-day workshop sessions that focus on providing participants with hands-on training and helping them acquire tools that will aid them in the development of innovative ideas and their implementation. From day one, the trainees begin working to build on their initial project ideas with the objective of presenting a consolidated business model on the last day of the workshop.
Mrs. Signa Greaves-Francis, Mr. S'Andre, and Miss Sophia Henry from the School of Art and Design in Saint conducted the first replica of the Business Labs Methodology aimed at twenty-one students in Saint Lucia from December 16 through December 20, 2013. Moreover, Ms. Nerrissa Greenway Golden from the Government of Montserrat Youth Affairs conducted the replica in Montserrat on January 27, 2014.
In Anguilla, Mrs. Hyacinth Augustine from the Department of Youth and Culture of Anguilla implemented a replica aimed at ninety-three students during over four weekends between January and February 2014. Finally, Ms Joy-Anne Headley of Cuso International and Mr. Dowell Williams from The National Centre for Youth Development and The Jamaica Diaspora conducted the Business Labs Workshop from March 10 through March 14, 2014.
YABT thanks our local partners for making these activities possible. The goal of these replicas is to facilitate business development for young entrepreneurs. These replicas are part of the certification process, which includes the following steps:
Step 1. Training of Trainers: provide methodology through experiential, hands-on, intensive training.
- Inception Plan – one page document detailing how are we going to implement the methodology learnt, identifying national partners, support and potential beneficiaries
Step 2. Follow up and Guidance to organize and conduct a Business Labs replica.
- Potential Trainers conduct a pilot Business Lab for young people within three months after taking the TOT
Step 3. Long-term Strategy: Potential Trainers and YABT assess together the results and impact of the replica Business Labs in order to make necessary adjustments to push forward an Execution Plan.
Step 4. Certification Ceremony of the Business Lab Trainer
*These workshops are directly linked with supporting youth entrepreneurship programs in the Caribbean, including the Caribbean Innovation Challenge (CIC), an international entrepreneur competition and business start-up accelerator for young people in the CARICOM Member states.
