Secretary General of the OAS supports the participation of youth in the Migration and Development Forum
Washington, D.C., April 28, 2016 – The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, sent a message congratulating young people for their participation in the Forum on Migration and Development: Towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, organized by the Committee on Migration Issues (CAM by its Spanish initials)
The participation of youth in this event is part of the process of the Young Americas Forum. In Panama, young people established migration as a central issue and the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) coordinated a space with the Committee on Migration Issues in which they can follow up on the Declaration of Panama.
“We celebrate, like the Secretary General Luis Almagro did, the participation of youth in this forum. This opportunity was achieved thanks to his leadership and commitment. Young people take action in respect to the problems that they identify concerning migration and they will also do so in the implementation of the 2030 Development Agenda,” stated Luis Viguria, Chief Executive Officer of the Young Americas Business Trust.
“Governments, international organizations and civil society must find the ways to implement, in a committed way, the 2030 Development Agenda. For that, the Committee on Migration Issues of the OAS has dedicated much of their activities during the 2015-2016 period to exchanging ideas, experiences, and good practices in the promotion and protection of the Human Rights of the Migrants and in the way of empowering migrants and their families as agents of development in the hemisphere. In this exercise, it is fundamental to have the participation of young people, who, during the next 15 years, will have the task of continuing to work on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for our communities,” expressed Daniel Cámara Avalos, President of the CAM.
The report that youth will have the opportunity to present at the forum comes from the contributions of 26 dialogues conducted in a process that involved over 1,500 young people in the hemisphere.
The Forum “Migration and Development: Towards the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda” will take place this May 6 at the OAS main building in Washington. It is free to attend and will be broadcasted live. To participate, complete the following regristration.
