The Americas are facing the challenges of globalization and a growing knowledge economy that has a growing impact on the competitiveness of the countries. Taking into account the relevance of innovation, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), through the Division of Competitiveness and Innovation, carried out the Dialogue of Regional Innovation Policy "Innovation in Services", an event held on 19-20 of June in Panama City, Panama.
The Dialogue created a space to discuss the importance of innovation in the services sector, exchanging experiences among the participating countries and exploring how innovation policies affect the sector, and work as mechanisms to improve the quality, design and implementation of policies to support the sector's growth. The meeting also helped to identify key issues that could be incorporated in future Dialogue.
The Young Americas Business Trust (YABT), an international organization that promotes and implements programs to foster entrepreneurship and innovation in young people in the Western Hemisphere, was part of the select audience that attended this important Dialogue, organized by the IDB. Edgar Maestre represented YABT at the meeting and exchanged program experiences with other participants from across region. The Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation of Colombia (Colciencias), an institution that works in cooperation with the YABT, was also present at the meeting, represented by Dr. Claudia Jimena Cuervo. Dr. Cuervo participated as a speaker at one of the panels of the Dialogue.
The agenda for the Dialogue was enriched with the presentation on development in innovation policy by governmental institutions. Similarly, success stories by companies from service sectors such as mining, technology, biotechnology, among others, were presented during the two days of the Meeting. The latter was supplemented by the results of recent Studies on innovation in services presented by Specialists from the IDB and other agencies such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
"The Dialogue has provided a substantial contribution to identify and prioritize policies capable of improving the environment for the development of innovative companies in the services sector. At YABT we share the objectives of these Dialogue, as they contribute to our efforts to support young entrepreneurs who are driving innovative business across the continent", said Edgar Maestre after the event. "As an organization that promotes programs based on these pillars, YABT seeks to unite efforts with other actors for the development of favorable policies for the competitiveness and sustainability, fostering the development of solid ecosystems for innovation", added Mr. Maestre.
YABT, in cooperation with the Organization of American States (OAS), develops the yearly Talent and Innovation Challenges of the Americas (TIC Americas), an international entrepreneurship competition that promotes and accelerates the incursion of young entrepreneurs from the in the market. In addition, YABT, in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Sub-regional Office for Barbados and the Organization of Eastern Cari bbean States (OECS), recently implemented the first edition of the Caribbean Innovation Challenge (CIC). CIC is a component of the Project Youth Innovation (Youth-In): Caribbean Network for the Development.
