New York, U.S.A. - On June 26th, the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) participated in the Panel discussion "Entrepreneurship as a tool for Empowerment" that formed part of the conference on "Entrepreneurship for Development", co-hosted at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York by the President of the General Assembly and the Israeli Mission to the UN.
The event followed the passage of Israel-initiated UN General Assembly resolution 67/202 on "Entrepreneurship for Development." The resolution was designed to encourage countries to support entrepreneurs, as a means of advancing growth and prosperity in the developing world. The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the importance of empowering young people through entrepreneurship. "[Entrepreneurs] must be encouraged to stand at the frontline of socio-economic change, in the service of sustainable development," highlighted the President of the General Assembly, Vuk Jeremić.
The Panel "Entrepreneurship as a tool for Empowerment" featured remarks by YABT's Founder and Chair of the Board of Directors, Roy Thomasson alongside the following distinguished speakers: Rahama Wright, Founder and CEO of Shea Yeleen International; Naila Chowdury, CEO of TeleConsult Group; Helen Marquard, the Executive Director of the SEED Institute; and David Sengeh, Doctoral Student at MIT and Entrepreneur.
The first panel discussion titled "Entrepreneurship for Development" also featured Sherry Tross, representing the Organization of American States (OAS), who spoke of the entrepreneurship of the young generation. She said youth often have an attraction to sustainable entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility (CSR), and that investments should be made to give youth the opportunity to experiment and engage across cultures.
YABT has worked extensively with the Israeli Government, developing training programs in Latin America and the Caribbean, and through Israel's Agency for Development and Cooperation (MASHAV) and the Golda Meir Mount Carmel International Training Center (MCTC). On June 17-30, 2013 MASHAV, MCTC and YABT will conduct an International Workshop "Entrepreneurial Innovation: Business from the idea to implementation" that will take place in Haifa, Israel.
