The Caribbean Innovation Challenge is an international competition and business start-up accelerator program for young entrepreneurs in the Caribbean. The CIC is organized and developed by UNDP Barbados and the OECS, and the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) as part of the UNDP project Youth Innovation (Youth-IN): A Caribbean Network for Youth Development,.
The CIC differentiates itself from other existing business model competitions by incorporating "before and after" stages, focusing on training and mentoring as preparation for the competition, and providing follow up services that include access to finance, networking activities, internships and promotion opportunities – which are key support services for first-time young entrepreneurs.
Youth-IN responds to the needs of youth identified in the report of the CARICOM Youth Commission (2010): 'Eye on the Future: Investing in YOUTH NOW for Tomorrow's Community'. Youth-IN promotes Caribbean youth INclusion, youth INnovation, youth INterest and youth Involvement. The project addresses the challenges of young people in the region and enhances opportunities for young people to make a difference in their communities and their nations.
In addition to the CIC launch, there was a successful Mini Business Labs training session organized on October 1, providing over 50 young people from Barbados the opportunity to identify business ideas which later can be developed into business plans or established businesses. These participants will be registering these ideas in the CIC competition.
