YABT strengthen its ties with Colombian Students through the Scholars 2020 Initiative

Washington D.C., March 28 de 2014 − On march 25, the Secretary for External Relations Alfonso Quiñónez, the Alternate Representative for the Colombian Permanent Mission to the OAS Yadir Salazar Mejía, and the OAS E-government Coordinator Mike Mora, hosted twenty-four students from Colombia as part of the Scholars 2020 Initiative. The aim of this encounter was to show all participants the OAS programs related to youth entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility.

The Scholars 2020 Initiatives is aimed at Colombian senior students to consolidate their global knowledge by visiting college and university campuses as well as multilateral organizations. In doing so, the participating students were able to find out studies and career opportunities in Washington D.C. This edition of the Scholars 2020 was mainly focused on topics related to Entrepreneurship and Leadership. Moreover, this initiative also included gatherings between participants and technological enterprises, such as Google, Microsoft, and Apple in order stimulate these future Latin-American leaders to undertake new projects and start-ups. On their way back to their home country, these students are expected to seize a plethora of new opportunities to study and/or work abroad.

During their meeting with the OAS, panelists discussed topics related to corporate social responsibility in small and medium enterprises, youth entrepreneurship in the Americas and the OAS's role through its Tourism and Trade Department and the YABT. On this occasion, the YABT Communications Officer Isabella Troconis gave a presentation of our most relevant programs and its positive impact on young citizens in the Americas. More specifically, she explained thoroughly the TIC Americas and Eco-Challenge, the Young Americas Forum, and the business labs. At the end of all presentations, a Q&A session was established between the presenters and all participants to answer all curiosities that aroused from YABT's presentation. At the end of the meeting, the Colombian students showed their delight and appreciation for taking part in this meeting and for acknowledging new opportunities in terms of education and professional career.
