Eco-Challenge Central America arrives to Honduras

Tegucigalpa, Honduras, October 14, 2015 — The Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have launched the special category of Eco-Challenge for Central America within the XI Edition of the Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas (TIC Americas). This special environmental category of TIC Americas is co-organized by PepsiCo Latin America Beverages and sponsored by the Central American Bottling Corporation (CBC) and Postobón.

The regional launch of TIC Americas and Eco-Challenge took place at the headquarters of the Consejo Hondureño de la Empresa Privada (COHEP) in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. We would like to thank the participation of over 100 young people and representatives from the program METAS, UNAH University, UNITEC University, the National Institute for Vocational Training (INFOP), and partners of COHEP.

During the ceremony, Ms. Claudia Barrientos, Representative of the OAS in Honduras, highlighted the importance of development programs such as TIC Americas and Eco-Challenge as an opportunity to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Honduras. Luis Viguria, CEO of YABT, mentioned how Honduras, which previously hosted the TIC Americas Finals in 2009, has enormous potential because of its young people and invited them to participate in this edition. Isabella Troconis, Eco-Challenge Coordinator, motivated young people to take advantage of this opportunity by using Eco-Challenge as a vehicle to take their idea to the next level and use YABT’s network to connect with entrepreneurs from all over the hemisphere.

The Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas is a support platform for young entrepreneurs and an international competition developed by the Young Americas Business Trust with the support of the Organization of American States. Since its creation in 2007, more than 31,709 young entrepreneurs from 48 countries have participated in TIC Americas with a total of 13,360 business proposals presented.

TIC Americas is aimed at young people between 18 and 34 years old who have a business idea or are already operating a small or medium sized enterprise. TIC Americas has three categories in which young entrepreneurs can register their business: Start-up, SMEs, and Eco-Challenge. We invite Honduran youth to join us and participate with the objective of strengthening our communities, environment, and above all develop the talents and ideas of our young entrepreneurs. Register at January 15, 2016.

For the third consecutive year CBC and YABT launched the Eco-Challenge Central America in Honduras with the purpose of supporting the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem and boost visibility of Honduras’ entrepreneurial talent. Through Eco-Challenge and TIC Americas we provide an international platform so that young Honduran entrepreneurs can validate their businesses and be part of a global network of entrepreneurs, private sector and international organizations.

For this edition, Eco-Challenge aims to support young entrepreneurs that propose solutions to four environmental challenges: better access to water, recycling and massive recollection of PET bottles, sustainable agriculture and mobile apps that promote a sustainable lifestyle.

Finalists will have the opportunity of interacting with mentors, investors, representatives of the private sector and international organizations as well as officials from the highest level of governments with the objective of transforming their projects into sustainable and successful businesses in Latin American and the Caribbean. The TIC Americas and Eco-Challenge Finals will take place in June, 2016 within the framework of the XLVI OAS General Assembly.

The Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas (TIC Americas) is an international platform for entrepreneurship and business accelerator for young entrepreneurs and start-ups led by the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) with the support of the Organization of American States (OAS).

In 2009, PepsiCo and YABT partnered in order to create the Eco-Challenge, a category within TIC Americas that focuses on innovative projects that offer creative solutions to environmental problems. Three years ago CBC joined PepsiCo and YABT in order to support the Eco-Challenge Central America category. In 2015, Postobón joined to reinforce the Eco-Challenge in Colombia. The category has grown progressively since its creation, where 300 teams from the region registered to participate. Only in 2015, 1,522 teams from 34 countries registered in the Eco-Challenge. This demonstrates the increasing participation of young people in creating innovative solutions to environmental problems.
