Exchange of best practices: Americas- Africa

Washington DC, July 30, 2015- Entrepreneurship, governance, transparency and participation of young people were the main topics discussed at the meeting between authorities of the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and representatives of the African Union Commission.

Luis Viguria, CEO of YABT, and his team shared work experiences that YABT developed in the Americas with Ibraheem Bukunle Sanusi, an official of the Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission. The aim of the meeting was to exchange information and develop a plan of joint activities between the two organizations.

The African Union Commission is the executive arm of the African Union and is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This organization deals with different policy areas such as human rights, governance, transparency, accountability, citizen participation, among others.

YABT explained the importance of youth empowerment and the work of programs such as the Young Americas Forum and Leadership Links. Details about the tools of support that this organization offers to young entrepreneurs in Latin American and Caribbean through the competitions TIC Americas and Caribbean Innovation Challenge were also illustrated.

Both institutions agreed to develop joint activities such as virtual dialogues to bring young people from both continents in order to exchange experiences and best practices. It emerged from the conversation between the authorities that the realities and needs of the young people they work with day to day differ only in the distance.

Capacity building and effective channels for youth is a commitment of both the YABT and the African Union Commission and therefore this meeting serves as a strategic opportunity to move forward in that direction.
