IAF, YABT and SAS/OAS officially present the InnovAction Challenge: “Innovation in action responding to COVID-19”

Washington DC, October 27th, 2020.- The Inter-American Foundation (IAF), the Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) and Summits of the Americas Secretariat (SAS/OAS) officially presented the InnovAction Challenge as one of the 3 categories of the XVI edition of the Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas (TIC Americas) at a special event on October 26th.

The official presentation had the participation of H.E. Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States; Paloma Adams-Allen, President and CEO of the Inter-American Foundation; María Celina Conte, Acting Director of the Summits of the Americas Secretariat; Erick Scheel, President of PepsiCo Beverages Latin America; Yadira Pinilla, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of YABT; Luis Viguria, CEO of YABT and Valerie Lorena, Executive Director of YABT.

The InnovAction Challenge will connect outstanding young entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean with tools and resources to respond to the needs of communities most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This competition allows us to complement the work and initiatives being promoted to hold back the pandemic that has affected the continent so much," said OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro in his speech, who also emphasized the mechanisms the OAS is leading through the portal: “More Rights beyond the Pandemic”.

The InnovAction Challenge will support young people in transforming their ideas into viable social enterprises for grassroots reconstruction. Everyone who registers for the Challenge will receive business training and access to a growing regional network of entrepreneurs, among other benefits. Winning projects in four categories—social inequality, gender equity, citizen youth participation, and industry reactivation—will also receive seed capital and additional technical supportfrom leading international industry and development experts.

Adams-Allen states, “With the InnovAction Challenge, we are drawing on our extensive network of grassroots organizations to reach that cohort of brilliant yet underserved young people who have historically had less access to business funding.”

This competition is a regional support program that takes into consideration the priorities and concerns that youth have raised through the activities and consultation channels of the Young Americas Forum, an official process of youth participation at the Summits of the Americas, coordinated by YABT.

“Through the InnovAction Challenge, the young innovators and entrepreneurs of our hemisphere will assume responsibility and seize the opportunity of bringing social and economic relief to our region,” states Viguria. “We thank the Inter-American Foundation, the Summits of the Americas Secretariat, and the Organization of American States for making this challenge possible, reiterating once again our commitment for creating opportunities for participation and development for our youth,” added Viguria in his speech.

"I ask other actors to continue consolidating these initiatives and renew our development agenda. I invite them to join our efforts and allow us to work together for the progress of our region" said Maria Celina Conte.

This is the time to turn your idea into reality. The best 20 proposals chosen by the Committee of Experts of Evaluation will go to the Final Stage to be carried out in virtual modality and compete for an award package. You will be able to access great benefits just by registering for free.
