Policy Lab presents recommendations for economic recovery with a focus on young women entrepreneurs

Washington, D.C., September 23rd, 2021. The Young Americas Business Trust (YABT) carried out the Policy Lab/Summit Talks “Young Women Entrepreneurs and COVID-19 in Latin America and the Caribbean”, a high-level event that allowed discussing new approaches and priorities to accelerate the sustainable and inclusive economic recovery through female entrepreneurship in the young population of the region.

The event began with the opening remarks by the Director of the Summits of the Americas Secretariat (SAS/OAS), Mrs. María Celina Conte; the President of the YABT Board of Directors, Ms. Yadira Pinilla; and the World Bank's Poverty and Equity Practice Manager; Mrs. Ximena V. Del Carpio. The moderation of the event was in the hands of Mrs. Valerie Lorena, Executive Director of YABT.

The main presentation of the three reference studies was made by the team of economists of the Gender Innovation Lab for Latin America and the Caribbean (LACGIL-World Bank), made up of Mrs. Eliana Rubiano-Matulevich, Mr. Jacobus Joost De Hoop, Mr. Javier Romero and Mr. Leonardo Iacovone. During their session they highlighted key aspects of investing in economic opportunities for women, increasing job quality levels, promoting improvements in the labor market on gender issues, access to productive assets, and a series of solutions in the framework of interventions with implications for public policy.

The closing remarks and special announcements included the intervention of the Minister of Women of Paraguay, H.E. Celina Lezcano Flores, the Specialist of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM/OAS), Mrs. Beatriz Piñeres; and the Chief Executive Officer of YABT, Mr. Luis Viguria.

The speakers by partner entities agreed on the importance of working together to support common objectives and strategies aimed at reducing the gender gap, and facilitating resources and integrated support for the growth of economic initiatives lead by young women in Latin America and the Caribbean, in order to help them overcome the barriers that increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This first Policy Lab framed within the Young Americas Forum was the result of a joint effort between the YABT, the SAS and the CIM - both organs of the OAS - and the World Bank, through the LACGIL. YABT will soon announce the next Policy Lab as part of what will be the participation of youth in preparation for the Ninth Summit of the Americas, which will be hosted by the United States next year.
